Former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney is back in the news, and this time it's not for shooting someone. The former CEO of Halliburton, a name that has become synonymous with corruption over the past decade, is being sought by Nigerian authorities on bribery charges and "criminal conspiracy."
The charges stem from an "alleged $180 million bribery payment used to secure a $6 billion liquefied natural gas contract." (Source)
According to Godwin Obla, the prosecuting counsel at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Nigeria, Cheney's arrest warrant will be issued and transmitted through Interpol.
Cheney was the CEO of Halliburton from 1995 to 2000, and according to Obla, responsible for "acts that occurred during that period."
Prosecutors are also investigating the international companies Saipem and Technip.
If the Nigerian government can get Cheney, more power to them. I'd suggest that this same government also get serious about bringing down its own corrupt politicians and protecting its people in places like the Niger Delta, where everyday gas flares continue to disrupt the daily lives and endanger the health of its inhabitants. What has been happening in the Niger Delta in the name of corporate greed is a textbook case of human rights and environmental abuses.
