TSA Searches Lingerie-Clad Woman in Wheelchair for 1 Hour

By Mark Berman Opposing Views

Passengers are going to great lengths to avoid intrusive pat-downs at airports. One woman figured she'd wear just her lingerie to the airport to prove she wasn't hiding anything. It didn't work.

Tammy Banovac is confined to a wheelchair -- a wheelchair that always sets off the metal detector, requiring a pat down. The 52-year-old Oklahoma woman said she had enough after a particular uncomfortable search two weeks ago.

'If it happened anywhere else, it would have been sexual assault,' she told The Oklahoman.

So when she arrived at the airport in Oklahoma City for a flight to Phoenix on Tuesday, Banovac thought she'd simplify things, wearing just a black bra and panties under a trench coat. However, TSA agents detected traces of nitrates on her wheelchair. Banovac said the traces of the explosive ingredient could have been caused by medication or picked up on a recent hunting trip.

So she had to be hand-searched. That took an hour, and she missed her flight.

An airport spokeswoman told local TV station that she had to be subjected to the pat-down because she refused to go through the metal detector at all.

Banovac returned to the airport the following day in the same get-up. This time she made her flight.

A fellow passenger captured video of her initial airport ordeal:
